Art is fundamentally a survival device of the species. Otherwise it wouldn’t be so persistent. It wouldn’t be in every culture. We wouldn’t know about it…

Milton Glaser: first graphic designer to win the National Medal of Arts. Glaser continues:
How does art help you survive? It helps us survive by making us attentive. In a simplistic way, when you go past a forest and you look at it and you say, “that looks just like Cézanne.” And you realize Cézanne has made you see the reality of the forest in a way that you never could have seen before. He’s made you attentive. Every work of art that you care about makes us attentive. And if it doesn’t do that it ain’t art.

Great lecture, and fun to watch. What motivates performance? Autonomy, mastery, and purpose… I buy it. via tereza
Paul Graham always writes a thoughtful essay, and his most recent essay on internet addiction is no exception.
Something to ponder, from the footnotes:
People commonly use the word “procrastination” to describe what they do on the Internet. It seems to me too mild to describe what’s happening as merely not-doing-work. We don’t call it procrastination when someone gets drunk instead of working.
Several people have told me they like the iPad because it lets them bring the Internet into situations where a laptop would be too conspicuous. In other words, it’s a hip flask.

This band is simply great. I think it’s a fuzzed out cello rocking that riff… love it.

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.
